The first word of the first line of the first page beckons to me.
“Begin here,” it whispers to me in the rustle of turning pages.
A reader knows it’s more than just alphabet in recombination
Of just twenty-six little letters (bigger if we use caps), images
Of sounds, pictures in words, thoughts of ideas, imagination
At serious play, working feverishly to describe what it sees,
As when the door to opportunity is a set of swinging batwings
Beyond which an itinerant tin-pan alley troubadour sings

Songs of hope and protests against social injustice and greed.
He sings for free or tips each night what that day he wrote
Practicing his phrasings on the fly, writing, organic and free.
Lyric verses set down to music, word for word, note for note
Tell of the life and times of Woodie Guthrie, a true pioneer
Of the music of the folk, raw, rustic without polish or veneer.
