On Writing a Poem
with pencil, pen, quill, or brush, the hand wields power in the delicate
making of tiny lines, curves and dots as it crafts a scene, a place,
a scenario, a thing, anything and everything the mind’s eye can see
poems are sketches
word-art symphonies of thought
read aloud to share
our tiny marks become sounds when read silently
or aloud to form the language of life and of living as human beings
hard rhymes and hard times,
fine lines, crying tears of ink
show the world you’re here
words are chosen most carefully for their color, tone and sound,
and for their size and look as well, and style assumes form
as the poem grows and is dressed for an outing
sketch an idea
picture it, a thousand words
paint between the lines
subject, emotion, biases and more influence shape, and in fact inform
the image the poem shall take as length of syllable, word, pause,
and line are formed from within
color life with thought
lay the page in vivid views
in lines of Haibun
