A Still Night
A Still Night.
The man he stopped at the bank that day,
Sat in the grass and decided to stay,
He hoped that he would find them at home
So he sat and stared.
He spread some peanuts on the grass
Hoping they would come at last,
Did not dare take off his coat,
Just sat on the grass and stared.
SO after one hour he heard movement below,
He just sat in the grass and watched the head grow
Now the body got bigger and then, it was there
Black and white and thick matted hair
The badgers were here at last.
They eat the nuts he dare not move he hardly had time to breathe,
All the badgers had come out to play,
Now he could not leave.
They dug out some holes and left their piles before filling in and moving off,
Some were with young and they chaperoned them along,
Moving bodies around and long,
Off they went on paths so old, worn with tramping of generations of life,
And into the forest and into the night, would they all come back to the sett?
Suddenly all movement stopped and he heard a noise and you could bet, they had heard it before he did,
Suddenly the whole area was still and all the badgers gone,
A fox walked by but no badgers were here, just a man in a coat, and a fox with red coat,
But the badgers were no more.
