6/30 What Kind of Poet are You?

Here's something I wrote a few years ago. Yes, it is one of my styles, but it holds a message of my belief about writing poetry too.

.

..........To rhyme or not to rhyme is not always the question.
..........To make poems happy or sad,
..........large or small is one's own discretion.
..........To write in perfect meter, with verbs all in a row
..........doesn't grow great poems. Is that what you were told?

..........Elements slip from stealth fingers,
..........near rhyme ends and enjambment lingers
..........like bees beneath rose noses'
..........there's lots in poetry that's not presupposing.

..........You can chose your style, make your way clear
..........and decide to the "forms", you'll adhere.
..........You may write sonnets of sailors speaking Portuguese
..........or a 5 line Tanka about cats called Burmese.
..........You itch for that quatrain plus one; a poem quintet . . .
..........but you type on and instead, write a Sestet!

..........You might get upset and fret about being inept
..........for you've no more to say than a two line couplet.

..........or:
..........In passiveness , one line fains Haiku . . . .

..........oh FOO!

..........Well, sometimes poems just happens like that -
..........you think it's a winner, have it written down pat
..........but you realize shortly it isn't always so,
..........for poetry isn't something you just know . . .
..........it's something you grow!

I am an inward poet
trying hard to connect;
and every word is done with that effect--
I laugh, cry, shout, and mope;
"hear me, hear me";
in the name of hope...

Definitely pulling from within, Jane. And David, reminds me of before we met. I guess poetry wears a million shrouds, speaks many tongues; but is capable of baring the innermost of the writer's intent.

I recon so

I seem to spend my life going from mess to mess
things in my life seem so wrong yet all I can do is stress
maybe tomorrow things will seem right
that's one thing about me I never give up the fight
the way I see life is if you believe something is true
no matter who you are you find a way to fight through
this is what I do day in day out
some days calmly others I scream and shout
I never make myself out to be perfect
I am only human and we all have our defects
although mine are to stress and shout
just like others I use mine to fight my way out
some people use anger some inflict pain
most don't mean it they just trying to play life's game
so even our faults become our strength of good
as without them we would spend our life treated like mud
by those who had the strength to move ahead
the way I see it is we need to sometime put our good to bed
I'm not saying forever as that would be wrong
just for a while until we feel strong
the good in us all should be there standing tall
however if you ever feel your being forced to lose your true belief
that is when your anger and passion should find its release
people often say chose your battle
this is true otherwise we would be like a herd of wild cattle
people have a way of good release too
mine is writing a poem or two
its not like me to write like this
when I do it gives me a feeling of bliss
I think I could write about life all-day
every emotion and feeling felt in every way
like how I feel about love
people describe it as your heart soaring like a dove
I however feel love is more solid more real
I would describe love as a home
secure, loving, looked after, well build, but most of all never alone
I don't think that I believe in soul mates
as that would mean there is only one person for each of us according to fate
what if you never met them or they found the wrong girl or boy
would that mean you would live your life without any joy
I strongly believe that when you meet the one you love
there is no fate, no sign from above, and defiantly no flying dove
I honestly think that when you find someone a true friend
someone you trust is to be there until they end
just light a match and set your friendship on fire
there you have love in all its burning desire
this is just what I think though
when you find love only you will know
I do often wonder what happens if you let love go
does that person feel instant sorrow
is their sorrow as if there feel a death
do they grieve for it with every breath
or is it sorrow that just makes you sad
I think sorrow is not good but also it is not that bad
we all need to feel it of that I'm sure
as nobody can have a life that is totally pure
sorrow no matter its form or reason
has to come as sure as each season
if we did not have sorrow or pain
I don't think any of us would be sane
these things are here to test us to see how strong we can be
to see if we can survive it as strength is the key
our minds can over come anything they are given
I think no challenge is ever misgiven
every challenge every thought
given to us so the problem can be sought
I think I have a strong mind
I know what I want and will get it yet still remain kind
it is important to stay who you are
as it takes a strong mind and a good heart for you to go far
so armed with these weapons of war
in the battle of sorrow your victory will soar
the words I write come from the heart
as this is where my true feelings start
now this I'm sure you all will know
when your heart is happy its love overflows
the heart is an amazing thing
it never stops to surprise me how much pain and joy it can bring
my heart like yours has been broken in the past
thankfully our hearts have enough love to last
love is meant to last a lifetime
and that is all I will ever hope for from mine
I know you may not agree with the words I say
but be honest its a great thought to have love everyday
this is the last I will write as I have wrote so much as it is
whether its working out your place in life
falling in love with your husband or wife
feeling the pain of losing someone you love
if it be they leave or go up above
or realising you have a strong heart and mind
please remember life comes once so be kind to it
and I know you will find the place you fit

So Peter, it's about the rhyme spurring you on. Surprises me you struggle with your end rhyme as it seems to come very easy to you. It's your poem system, it's what makes you unique:-)

Jin, you're not surprised Peter is fallible! We all have our struggles with our muse, if we didn't it would be boring. Please Jin, BORE us:-)

And nobody, you speak the epitome of what I just said. Without bad, there is no good. Without sorrow there is no joy. In a nutshell, this concept is paramount in every poet's writing - the strong emotions that cause us to think. Thank you very much for your contribution. We'd love to see more of you.

its strange to have people understand what i write most of the people i know just dont get me so thank you very much and im glad it was ok

Many people who are not poetically inclined have a hard time understanding poetry. I've had several friends tell me this. When I was in school, I had no conception of math and science. It was an 8TH grade professor who told me that people adept in the arts very often have trouble with those subjects!

So, it can be a two-edged sword; one where we aren't understood; and as writers may not be as brilliant in other subjects.

Doesn't mean we're wrong and 'they' are right. Just means we're misunderstood. The great author Ray Bradbury, was considered a 'nerd' when he was beginning to come awake as a writer of short stories. Well, I guess if he's a nerd, then we're in good company:-)

Plot on, nobody. Don't let anyone hold you back because they say they can't understand you . . ..

it was english i was never any good at which is kinda odd because all i ever seem to do is write lol and im glad of the company :D

Regardless of our differing styles we all have the same pains and stresses that we portray in our poetry

It is the river that depicts my soul,
As does a tree, towering a grassy knoll
And the splendor of a star spangled night,
Befitting the orb's glowing light.
Yet,too, a rainbow arching in the sky,
Over a meadow wild with life.
And a peak can too be I,
Neath clouds drifting high.
Then wicked bellowing storms are me
Like the drowned sailor left out to sea.
Gentle rains, as refreshing as morning dew,
Have verses just as you do.
So what Kind of poet am I?
I am you and we are life.

Beautifully written, Teresa! Yes, I'd say you are all those things. Me wonders at times you aren't a Gemini . . . yet at heart, I think you are.

I sit and ponder over all my poems,
not really sure what kind of poet I am.
For I write about what comes to mind,
Just as long as it's child safe.

I write about the sun, moon and stars,
About the rain that falls.
I write about the flowers that grow,
the kind that grows in our hearts.

My poetry is like a new born babe,
waiting for the first word that helps it grow.
I let the sun shine in one my poems hoping it makes some sense,
my poems let people know what my day or life is about.

It tells a tale of my family friends, and nature,
about a tree that grows and a flower that blooms.
They talk about the ice on the light house during the winter,
little children sledding down a hill.

My poems are a way that tells who I am,
the sunset that I have seen.
Yes, my poetry is who I am,
they tell my story of all that I like who I am.

What kind of poet am I ?
don't know if I really know
Just hear and feel these words inside
then through my pen they flow

Words start off as letters then form into words
down my tounge they travel through my veins in prose
from my heart their sent as some tears drop from my nose
I need to write with feeling that overflows my toes

I love to sit and ponder by the river running cool
watch nature in its beauty reflect colour from the sky
listen to the birds as they tell their daily tale
swooping through water fish in mouth as off they fly

The dolphins they excite me as they play and tease
chasing chartered vessels and small yacht's in the breeze
they stir up rich emotions help create my nature style
keep my words and feelings flowing as they swim their nautical mile

I love to write of family their love joys and woe's
try to give some guidance in my poetical prose
If I see or feel unhappiness I try to turn it around
by writing good strong positives I try hard to be kind

I don't like people hurting feeling sad or unloved
I stir around inside my soul some words are locked above
There are certain words and phrase's that come together well
when that happens easily I feel excitement swell

I love to write with feeling
try to write with love
hope to write with wisdom
giving all of the above
