Circumstance of Hope

It is a long way, looking back, to nineteen-fifty-three;
And though many ways are longer, most I can see are not,

For as each life’s line must seem long to the hand that wears it,
So too might our shortened days seem lengthened by our shadows.

Once I held life, loosely, spinning, dancing around the floor –
Three-score and ten, I think the Good Book says, the time we have

To formulate plans that through effort’s hands know fruition.
How else do we delude ourselves but with our believing

We will live forever and don’t have to think about it,
That belief, as water, flows or sits in its form, subsumed

By the shapes of circumstance, as the volume of hope
Hangs by the thinnest thread time has known, and still it hangs?

As baby spider’s web, first spun of old abilities,
Crow’s feet lines bracket eyes still looking too much to the past.
