From a standing stop
to the speed of light

hope is a Vernesque jaunt from
20,000 leagues below
to a flight around the moon,

or a trip
into a looking glass
for company, or tea.

“What’s new?” I asked
and he replied:
“Nothing good,
nothing bad – sort of like
peanut butter and jelly
when you don’t like
either one.”

I grunted, and nodding
moved on. We are men,

beyond our prime,
engaged in
the feat of strength
of squeezing
a living
from a life
where the only hope is

the hope of imagination.
