Life
Long ago, something happened;
so very long ago, no one remembers,
or perhaps they never knew.
Nothing remains: no legends, no fables,
no maxims, nor witty rhymes ~ nothing
to remind us that we once stood in awe
of Nature’s true and awesome Self
and reverently passed the knowing
(mother to daughter, and father to son)
until its meaning was lost
in our far forgotten past.
Yet, the ripples of that long ago something
still echo through time and resonate
with the frequency of some thing,
some truth I cannot name.
Sometimes, I think I see it peeking out to see
if I’m still here to notice when it shimmers and shines.
A peripheral, Frostian glimmer, it denies my need
to know it and disappears. Before I may see it clearly,
it moves on, out, away from the troubled,
dark center of my soul and self.
Long ago, something came...
...and went, but left its mark.
A message, God’s parting promise
of love and faith, so simply coded
we may only know and understand it
in the moments of our greatest transitional thought:
coming and going,
into and out of this time we call life.

Re: Life
Reflections on the past, how often I wish my family had carried down through it's generations the stories of old. But with each new generation more history is lost. People live for the here and now and the past holds no importance. Thank you for your beautifully written poem.
