And the Morning Looks Back
the slimmest sliver of a crescent moon
rests floating in a slate blue morning sky
mated pairs of geese fly to the strip mine ponds
crows call in chorus to ask me why
I have come to share the morning with them
the cool morning air embraces my face
between two cold hands that coax and tempt me
to look to see the moon gone with no trace
Robins stop to look with their sidewise stares
and hop about with one eye on the ground
the other stares as the raven of Poe’s
wild imagination that could see sound
gauging that innate sense of survival
still as a stone statue I stand and watch
listening to the birds as time will allow
I study the bird that watches to catch
an insect or worm for its morning meal
an eye on me to be sure I don’t move
the bird and morning my reality
no one in judgment no one to reprove

Re: And the Morning Looks Back
I thank you both, profusely. My day is made, and so early in the morning, too. It's 4:46 a.m. here in good old Crooksville, Ohio, USA. I cannot sleep, so I'm up to write awhile.
I cannot imagine a finer compliment than to say you were moved and drawn into the imagery of the poem. The sun isn't up yet, but you've got me feeling sunny Thanks again. Mike
