Scratching in the Sand Empty Scratching in the Sand

A writer can fly higher than any bird ever flew,
a sailor may sail more oceans than most have ever dreamed,
on wings of imagination or canvas or Curlew,

a long-billed shorebird known as a sand piper to a few.
We long to be free, but we found freedom not as it seemed.
A writer can fly higher than any bird ever flew,

but can the writer write something original and new?
Can she or he accept the inspiration, sunlight beamed
on wings of imagination or canvas or Curlew?

Littérateur, voyager, expeditionary, too,
writer, dreamer, and thinker, well educated and trained,
a writer can fly higher than any bird ever flew.

Cinderella liberty, a literary curfew,
reaching beyond limitations, as each day’s first rays gleamed
on wings of imagination or canvas or Curlew.

With nothing but time to write and nothing more to eschew
than the chance of reading the reviews, as critics explained,
“A writer can fly higher than any bird ever flew
on wings of imagination or canvas or Curlew.”
