When Did Fred stop Dancing with Ginger?

Why should we assume 'getting older' always means a respectable resignation to one's lot? That the crotchety can't remember being carefree; that the worn oldster surely doesn't have sultry memories!; that something deep in the mind of the aged guy or gal just can't dream of kicking up their heals? I can tell you my eighty-eighty year old father still dreams dreams. And it doesn't matter what the dreams or aspirations are- what works is the kick in the pants one gets from knowing they still have it . . . that young thing: desire.

OBJECTIVE

Write a poem from the perspective of a young-at-heart individual trapped in the confines of an age warn body. Pretend, surmise, create - and with great heart touched empathy, let Fred and Ginger waltz again . . ..

Trapped

Trapped in a dream world
Going round in my head
Scared to go to sleep at night
Scared to go to bed

It wasn’t always like this
My dreams used to be nice
Some of my dreams were lovely
I wished I could dream then twice

But then as I got older
Things began to change
My dreams began to bother me
Because they were so strange

Now I stay awake at night
Struggling with my thoughts
Desperate for a little sleep
And feeling out of sorts

Trapped by my emotions
All the things going through my mind
To scared to fall asleep
For all the bad dreams I may find

Dance with me…

Dance with me….she said
As she played a melodious tune
Close your eyes and remember
That precious night in June

Dance with me again my love
Let the rhythm move your feet
Gently hold me in your arms
To make my dreams complete

Forget that we are aged now
And our hair grows thin and grey
Yes, close your eyes and remember
How we danced the night away

Dance with me ….she whispered
As she hummed along in tune
Let the memories of yesteryear
Take us back to that night... in June.

Pete, good good writing! I fear many older folks have this dream in their waking hours too. That's when giving up takes a front seat. You, Jin and I have seen WAY too many examples. deep thought

when I was young and care free
life was still a mystery to me
I gained a few years and soon wed
before long I was put my kids to bed
dreams of youth started to roam my mind
as day to day life slowly did grind
beginning to feel trapped as a mother and soon a nan
I could take no more and I ran
I ran out that house and down the road
took driving lessons and passed 3rd time truth be told
I went to church and became who I wanted to be
I may be at the grand old age of 70 but I now know how to be free
my grandchildren visit I love watching them grow
but I am not the kind of nanna to let life go slow
I may take my time and I am always late
but I always make sure I have plenty on my plate
taking art classes, helping at church, and driving to adventure in my little red car
yes I was trapped for so long but this lil lady will go far
in my heart I am still a girl of 22
and everyday is something new
my granddaughter puts me best when she called me groovy gran as my new name
I do sometimes feel trapped as ages gets in the way but life is one big game
and I plan on playing for as long as I can
maybe I am also a bit of a nutty nan
