That Sound
That Sound
That sound, that sound
That Siren sounds to force us underground
Anderson or Tube for shelter.
It sounds again that sound of death
Will London burn tonight it said.
A walk to the shelter before it comes
The rain of bombs from planes so high.
For this is the Blitz
The London Blitz
When London burned
When Londoner's remained brave.
Down the Tube we go
Look for a space we do
To lay our head upon a bed to sleep
We hope and pray for us to see another new day.
Settling down for the night
We meet our friends again
To pass the time and ease the pain
A sing song for us To hide our fears and tears
While the Tube trains run
London remains alive.
Then it starts those sounds
Whistling of the bombs
Has the tail fins spins
On it journey from plane to ground.
Almighty explosion Vibrant the night.
Below ground Citizens do shake.
Theirs eyes look up in hope its safe.
The ground its shakes like a giant Earthquake
Has the bombs they strike their targets.
Indiscriminately these bombs they kill
Mother, Child, Soldier, Old and Young, Fathers too
Oh when will peace come to thee this proud City.
Has the dawn breaks over this City
That Siren is heard once more.
This is the sound of the 'All Clear' its safe to return.
Has the population emerges from the ground
Into a world of total destruction.
Fires burn all around buildings fall down.
Chaos is calmed by the Services who care.
I walk these ruined streets to my home not far from here.
There's the Pub the School and
Oh my God my house has gone!
Oh those sounds those sounds
The Siren sounds.

Ah Rich, man's inhumanity to man. It's heart breaking how a few can control the masses. We in America never suffered through the bombings during WII as your Brits did. We hadn't seen that stuff since the 1700's Revolution, though there wasn't the type of artillery that 'progress' made possible by the 1940's.
Very descriptive writing. I'm so proud to have you as a member here at BpoetryWriters!

That Sound
Thanks Bev and Jenna,
My Mum told me they were living in Shepherd's Bush when the first attacks started. Her Mum said to her Father that she is not going to stay in London. My Mum was 17 at the time war broke out and she was one six children, the youngest ones were evacuated to Frome, Somerset and rest of the family followed shortly afterwards. My Mum joined the WRAFs and met my Dad in Frome when he got posted there after the evacuation of France.
The London Blitz highlights how the British people stuck together throughout the whole war and never Capitulated like some of the other Countries in Europe.
Probably the most devastating Air strike occurred on the evening of 29 December, when German aircraft attacked the City of London itself with incendiary and high explosive bombs, causing a firestorm that has been called the Second Great Fire of London. The first group to use these incendiaries was Kampfgruppe 100 which despatched 10 "pathfinder" He 111s. At 18:17, it released the first of 10,000 fire bombs, eventually amounting to 300 dropped per minute. Altogether, 130 German bombers destroyed the historical centre of London. Civilian casualties on London throughout the Blitz amounted to 28,556 killed, and 25,578 wounded. The Luftwaffe had dropped 18,291 short tons (16,593 t) of bombs.

Unbelievable how many lives were lost
Sadly, history has a way of repeating itself . . . hope this stuff isn't in our future. But . . . .

RE: That sound
Thanks Sue,
the most devastating event of damage and loss of life was NY's 9/11 terror attacks, repeated by the 7/11 attacks in London.
Now this Country is fighting a hopeless war in Afghanistan which the Russian's failed to win. There is no way any Country can beat the Taliban in their own Country it just a waste of Life and money fighting a War you cannot win...
