Hydration

Cerebral acuity drops sharply with the water table,
Almost as an indirectly viewed relationship,
As water alone is not enough to replace one’s sense.

We lose electrolytes in perspiration, vital elements,
Compounds, and chemicals our systems need:
Potassium, chief among them, and many more.

I know all these things, as I write them out to read,
And in reading reconfirm of the world a view
Shielded from the sun’s light and heat; yet I dehydrate.

In just a month, I endured a cluster of eight migraines,
Several lesser headaches of Biblical proportions,
And nightly, bed-soaking, dehydrating cold sweats.

Magnetic resonance imaging failed to show what
A cat’s casual glance revealed, a brain in need of water.
The doctors nodded together; they’d found the culprit.

IV’s were inserted in both arms. Several bags and a nap
Later, I woke to feeling clear-headed and wondering
Why I had such an urge to GO! “Pass the urinal please!”

Given my propensity to perspire heavily, I must, finally,
Implement a measured regimen of daily hydration;
In layman’s terms: I must not forget to water the plants.
