We don’t seem to mind so much when it’s someone we don’t know.
Oh, we try to; but you know how it is when there’s so much
Time and investment in pain and patience, enough to show
When we see compassion’s sweet smile and feel love’s warming touch.
It’s over-familiarity that makes us not care;
Or is it simple non-concern that turns our heads away?
When we go to bed and close our eyes, the pain’s never far
From our hearts, and for those we know, and those we don’t, we pray.
Fingertips caress a cheek damp with tears from eyes seeking
To share some small sense of self and worth in a loving look
From beneficial friends who hold tight to keep from breaking
Taboos and social norms en-scribed in the People’s good book.
Love smiles and tulips blossom through the crusted ice and snow,
Nature’s investment in pain and patience, come place, or show.
