Grandpa’s Laugh Empty Grandpa’s Laugh

He once dreamed of old folks talking
Of long ago. They spoke,
With spirits so brittle and broke,
Silence falling, sulking,

For whom the bells were knelling,
Noting each ciphered stroke,
As literal pigs in a poke.
The old folks channeling

Experience as the caulking,
Which their sealed souls provoke
And sharp uncaring fingers poke.
A grandpa comes walking,

Talking with himself, and list’ning,
To hear when the sun woke
To set each star to its own spoke,
Crystalline tears glist’ning.

Hill and dale behind him, lacking
Strength of heart to revoke
His grief, enough on which to choke,
He can’t keep from laughing.
