More Alphabet Soup, Please

Depending upon the seasons of dire circumstances
That burn or freeze us in lengthy alternating cycles,
We either warm to the task and then try to sweat it out,
Or most of us will fail for our not trying as we ought.
“I think I can, I think I can…” said the little engine,
So why can’t we? Why must our sweetest grapes make sour wine?
When does hope become hopelessness, and why do we still strive
Against the greatest odds, when we don’t know why, yet believe?
Nations built on Alphabet Soup’s literary ethic
Are nations that love their poets whose lines are nice,
Melodic and remembered, as with Scotland’s Robert Burns
Who wrote of Scotland’s countryside in earth-toned beige and browns.
The health of a country is marked by its working poets
Describing the seasons of dire circumstances as tropes.

This is a "Fourteener" which is a poem of fourteen lines of fourteen syllables each. Also, please notice the sight-rhyme couplets. Enjoy. And thanks for reading. Mike
