I Sit Here And Wonder
I sit here in wonder
I sit here in wonder
Listening to the sounds
Which surrounds me?
The afternoon sun
Doth warm my face
The river bank is my host.
I sit here in wonder
To the birds singing
In the fields and trees
And some that rustle
In the bulrush and reeds
Their songs make me feel
At ease with this world
A cuckoo song is all I know.
I sit here in wonder
Upon the bank of this river
In amongst the bulrushes and reeds
So tall and slender, waving in the breeze
The smell of blossom enhances my senses
Has I breathe in the air
The now slow current of the river,
Does bob and guide my float along the swim.
Alas, nothing caught as yet on rod and line.
I sit here in wonder
Watching the old horse
In the field across the river
He trots then runs around
His field of dreams
I hear his breath and hooves
Has he plays around his land
Then he stops and looks at me
We both stare at each other
Briefly lost in our thoughts
We seem to acknowledge our existence
And then he was off.
I sit here in wonder
Flask of tea ready
A sandwich to eat for lunch
No fish for me but cheese you see
With pickle to add to taste
I sit here in wonder
Across the bank I see
A water vole poke out of a hole
He cautiously looks around
Then jumps into the water
Swimming up the river frantically
Then disappears into another hole
To call upon ones neighbour no doubt.
I sit here in wonder
Do gaze up river at what's to come
A Bevy of swans approach so slow
Moving from side to side
Across the river so slow
They pass me proudly, with Cygnets in tow
Quick glances at me as they pass so slow.
I sit here in wonder
Hearing the sounds
Of little beasties in
The bulrushes and reeds
A big dragonfly lands
On the tip of my rod
“Bugger off” I do but cry
But settled he still but stays
A bumblebee, that sound I hear
Hovering slightly upon a breeze
Drops to flower and collects the sap
Then he the buzzes off,
Thank god for that.
I sit here in wonder
Reflecting on the day hath passed
Feeling at peace in calmness
Of the warm day sun
No worries doth reach me here
Amongst the Bulrushes and reeds
Bloody hell me float gone under
Oh blast, missed another bite you see
Oh I sit here and wonder,
Why fish do not appear
I do but wonder why?

Re: I sit here and wonder
Thanks Jinetty and Lucie, the River is actually a Drain part of drainage system of The Fens.
It's a lovely spot to fish there is wildlife and peace and quite, only interupted by the Peterborough to Lincoln railway line which crosses the Drain close by.
Just to prove I don't always lose the bites on me line I have a piccy of the Tench 5-6lbs in weight.

Thanks Bev and Teresa, Yes I live within a bus ride from the Fens, in fact Spalding is right on the edge.
