Clacton on Sea
Clacton on Sea
Oh Clacton-on-sea, I love to see
That short and wooden pier
To walk its boards to end on sea
Setting up one fishing rod and tackle
Five booms with hook and bait
A six ounce weight to chuck it out.
Distant sounds of happiness and joy
Can be heard from amusement arcades
Most of which are adults laughing you see
With kids denying they are their parents, Oh dear.
A laughing Policeman encased in a glass cabinet
Chuckles and laughs hysterically,
At entrance to the pier, paying side of course.
With the big wheel going round and round
Bumper cars, bumping together
With sparks coming from electric shoe overhead.
On fishing boom we stand
With rod in hand fully tackled it be
We do but throw our weight and bait
Into the deep blue sea for the fish to see
With bell attached to rod tip
We wait and wait and wait and wait again.
Curious bystanders do say
"Have caught anything mate"
Bell does but tinkle and strike I do
Pulling in fish and lobster attached.
After a good days fishing ends
We pack up our gear for home we go
With bagful of fish we caught
We head to train station to board the train
Train coaches crowded you see but still,
It funny to see that a seat is always free
With looks from passengers who smell
No, not them but us you see
A bag of fish that stink, Poo poo
Oh Clacton on Sea, you see.

Sounds a bit like our Coney Island here in the US! Wonderfully colorful writing Rich. I love your signature "you see', and /We do but'! I'd recognise you anywhere:-)
Good writing my boy!

Re: Clacton on Sea
Thanks Bev and Jinetty, I used to go to Clacton with my mate John Deedman, we used fish off the end of pier. One day we both caught a lobster each, when the tide was almost out. He sold his lobster to a local restaurant in Dalston got his name in the papers. I took mine home and it got boiled in a pot. It is true they do scream when they're being boiled, still so would I if I was getting boiled.
Clacton used to be a very nice town in the old days a bit like a mini Southend on sea. Still things change over the years the last time I went there I didn't recognise it. Times changes things...!!!!!
