11-20 The Harvest of Thanksgiving Turkey10

The American Thanksgiving Day is just around the corner! Celebrated on the 4TH Thursday of every November, it's a commemoration of America's First Thanksgiving; 'giving thanks' to God for guiding the Pilgrims safely to the New World. Thanksgiving became a Federal Holiday in 1863, during the height of the Civil War, when then President Abraham Lincoln, proclaimed November 26TH to be a national day of thanksgiving.

All of us have something to be thankful for, be it our health, good fortune, the love of our family, our job . . . and BTW, if you're alive you can be thankful for that! Thanksgiving is not a time for pessimism. It's a time to remember all the good things that have happened to you, and to remember too that those individuals closest to you are a wonderful part of that blessing.

This special prompt is a time to share your thoughts about real blessings. Whether you'd like to write about the history of Thanksgiving, or share something a bit closer to home, now is the time to write about the most precious holiday before we enter into Christmastime festivities.

Cheryl

The Harvest Of Thanksgiving

How grateful are we to
Live in a land filled
With freedom at God's gentle hand.
A long time ago
When the harvest was ripe,
Festivities gathered from morning til night.
A voyage began to a new found land
Called the United States of America
Celebrating liberty so grand!
They called it "Thanksgiving"
For all of their trials,
That succeeded by great leaders
And God's sovereign smile.
Together, each year,
We gather for a feast
In thanksgiving for what
Good harvest and peace.
So thank you dear Lord,
For all you have done.
We celebrate this season
In gratefulness and love.

11-20 The Harvest of Thanksgiving Empty Liberty

Post  Cheryl Brickner Mon Nov 21 2011, 14:33

Liberty

Liberty is something you cannot see.
It is a gift from God which
Sets us free!
For all mankind desires free will
Without a ruler that destroys and kills.
We've been given a land filled with
Free choices and will.
Our forefathers fought to keep us free
Given the opportunity for all to see.
Do we do our part to share in the cause
For freedom, liberty and stability of laws?
Liberty we shout for all to hear
Of freedom and rights essentially so dear!
Do not forget how much was done
To pay for our freedom
From our forefathers who won!

Beautiful prompt, and beautiful writing Cheryl. I look at our US now and see a land in turmoil, but I still feel this is the place to be. Though our freedoms seem to be eroding, and the moral backbone of this nation is not what it once was, America is resilient. We are blessed, and must stay thankful for all the blessings we hold dear! We must not forget where the blessing comes from, and in my humble opinion, it has always been from God . . ..

.

November 23, 1944

She gathered together her children as one,
two little squaws and two brave braves.
Wood smoked warmth in a room filled with love,
each in their place, heads bowed to behave.

She asked eldest John to give thanks to God
for all the blessings He'd managed to give.
The boy tried to pray like their daddy had -
especially the ending, their sins to forgive.

She hadn't much, but what there was
was served in bowls well used and old.
Minted peas, potatoes, a hen skillet fried.
Simple food, but such comfort to behold.

She asked them to take proper turns
telling what they felt thankful for
then she counted a few of her own.
The first, her children she truly adored,

"We have a floor, a roof, a garden plot,
Jesus in our home, a mule in the field.
We have each other - it's more than some
and our hearts in love are sealed."

"We have Joe, the rabbit and a tailless dog!"
katie Lu said, through a mouthful of peas.
Little Jack sneezed, said he was awful thankful
when he fell he hadn't skint his knees!

She smiled, looking down toward John,
his head bowed forward, eyes closed.
Better give the eldest a bit more time, she thought
to get all his thankfulness composed . . ..

Marie squealed, "ME!" ready to spill her beans.
At 4, she had many thoughts she could tell:
"I thanky Katie don't run blabbers to you cuz I drop her dolly Magpie in the mud
then I grab her and wash her in the bucket cept I drop her, SPLASH in the well!"

John grinned as he lifted his head,
looked at his sister then moved in his chair.
"I'm thankful we got food on our table ma
and thankful you made us warm clothes to wear.

I'm thankful too we had a daddy like pa.
I sure miss him a lot ma; that blasted war!
And if he were here with us right now . . ."

She saw him first.

Leaning against the jamb -
a smile, a tear, her husband filling the door.
The kids followed her gaze, he moved forward
and bent low to scoop up his four.

"And if he were here right now," their pa said,
he would never leave any of them again!
I'm home children, daddy's here to stay.
Got a bum leg and they sent me home to mend!"

November 23, 1944, Thanksgiving Day.
Two little squaws, three brave braves . . .
wood Smoked warmth in a room filled with love.
She thanked God for the blessings He gave.

Ahh, when I wrote this, I lived in a holler:-) Really, I came from a very rural section of southeastern Ohio. I knew many folks like this. Country people are so precious . . . I miss them and their simple, no-nonsense ways.

I got one, for you Cheryl....

THANKSGIVING DAY FEAST

Turkey in the oven baking and pie waiting to go in,

Grandma and Aunt Teyla with mom setting the table.

The men are watching the football game while playing or talking,

Smelling all that is cooking just waiting to even have some tender ham.

These are the Thanksgivings that I remember in days past,

Wishing to be these once again.

In Sixteen Hundred and Twenty One
Some folks got together
The settlers and the Indians
Took advantage of the weather

A date was set
The tables were laid
All day they did eat
And all day they played

They shared the Autumn harvest
Better known these days as the fall
The celebrations they went on for days
A good time was had by all

In Eighteen Hundred and Sixty Three
As civil war ravaged the nation
President Lincoln
Made a proclamation

In November every year
There would be a holiday
And everyone in the Americas
Would celebrate Thanksgiving Day

But It’s just the start
Of the holiday
I would look forward
To black Friday

Release! Release the odes, Lucie!

Nice poem Peter:-) I DO NOT go out on Black Friday:-) Shoot, Christmas rush is building in the stores already, so I'm shying away from much shopping PERIOD!

I should write a more traditional poem for this our Thanksgiving Day. It's tomorrow, and I haven't begun a thing. doh

Dori . . . NICE WORK, little lady! Are you all ready for turkey day? You hosting or going to your son's house?

If I don't get another chance, everyone . . . have a wonderful day tomorrow! For you UK folks, have a wonderful day too. Think of how much you'll save on your waistlines, lol!

Hugs and much love to all . . . bev
