From the Thief on the Cross Empty From the Thief on the Cross

As some of you may know, in addition to being something of a folk-poet, I am a folksinger-songwriter and rhythm guitarist. Our church music director asked me to be one of the soloists for our coming Easter Sunrise Service, and she asked me to choose a few songs that she might select from in building the program. I couldn't find one that seemed to suit me, so with her permission (so to speak) I decided to write a new Easter Song. I use a D chord progression and fingerpick and strum for effect in a country style. I am posting the words here to get the opinion of all you Christians out there. So far my wife and Pastor like it. And talking with my mother on the telephone last night, I set the phone down and played it for her. She, too, liked it very much.

So, here are the lyrics as sung. I will try to get it recorded and added to my video file.

From the Thief on the Cross

The son of a prostitute and some drunken sailor,
The thief knew for self and all but hate and scorn,
While God’s son of Mary knew love and peace,
Yet each was nailed and left to die upon crossed trees.

Two thieves were crucified with Jesus,
One scoffed at Him. The other called Him, “Lord,”
And asked only to be remembered
When Jesus came into His Father’s Glory.

Our goodness won’t get us into Heaven,
And our sins won’t send us to Hell.
It is only through Jesus that we may go in,
And only when we reject Him are we lost to our sin.

We may wait for Gabriel’s horn to summon us home,
From the seas and ground in new bodies Heaven-bound,
Or as Jesus told the repentant thief,
“You will be with me today in Paradise,”

Our goodness won’t get us into Heaven,
And our sins won’t send us to Hell.
It is only through Jesus that we may go in,
And only when we reject Him are we lost to our sin.

Our goodness won’t get us into Heaven,
And our sins won’t send us to Hell.
It is only through Jesus that we may go in,
And only when we reject Him are we lost to our sin.

It is only through Jesus that we may go in,
And only when we reject Him are we lost to our sin.

Only when we reject Him are we lost to our sin.
