Their Last Argument
“If you’re no more self-aware than that, you’ve got a problem!”
“What do you mean by that? I’m self-aware!
I’m aware of the fact that I’m angry with you right now!”
“And just why is that?”
“Because you won’t do as I say!”
“Do as you say!? So, just what do you mean by that?”
“I mean, damn you, that you are supposed to help me by
doing what I tell you to do!”
“Where are you going? Oh, right, just like you to walk away from a fight.”
“Is that what this is? A fight? Because if you want to fight…
Well, I wouldn’t recommend you take a swing at me.”
“So, big guy, what are you going to do, punch me?”
“No, but you may break your arm as I block your punch.”
“You wouldn’t dare!”
“Why because at the flick of your fickle finger you can call the police
and have me arrested for what you have done in its entirety?”
“Well, yes, what else would you expect?”
“Nothing. Not a damned thing. So, I don’t think so. I will not live
my life the way you think I should. I will not have you try
to govern my every move.”
“Well, how will you survive? Everyone knows men are incapable
of tending to themselves or others… Hey, now, wait a minute!
Where do you think you’re going?”
“I’ve had about a belly full of your bullshit. I’m outta here!”
She watched the door for a long moment.
It didn’t open again.
She shrugged and went to clean their bathroom shower.
She waited three days of sleepless nights and walking the floors
drinking twelve bottles of her husband’s wine collection. He’d bought
a case just the week before.
They’d visited Amish Country and had a lovely day together.
She fluffed his pillow.
When her husband had been gone three weeks,
She realized, He really means it this time. I guess I was
pretty hard on him sometimes. She sighed and shook her golden tresses.
She took all of his things out to the garage for a sale.
She sold or gave away everything,
And she would have sold his wine collection, too, but she drank that.
Some of it had tasted like crap, but it helped her to sleep.
Whatever became of him, she’d never know, and seldom care.

No worries, friends, this is not an autobiographical poetic effort, but rather is based on the situation I reluctantly witnessed between two friends, both of whom, I lost. These are indeed sad times.

Re: Their Last Argument
Thank you, Sue.
I thank you so very much.
Though we've had our moments over the years, my wife, Wanda, and I make it a rule that when we become angry with one another, we bide our time (biting our tongues, sometimes) till we can both talk sensibly. We are both quiet folk, but we like to talk closely and quietly with one another, and it is in that way that we approach and resolve our difficulties. As you say, there are far too many couples in circumstances similar to that of the poem's protagonists. Thank you, again, for your encouraging words.
