They took the scythes and sweep across the fields all day every day, men of all ages who could cut
They sweep and cut, they sharpen the edge and sweep and cut,
All day six days a week, Saturday though was only until midday,
Then go home and help the family to play.
Come Monday and the scything began again cutting reeds until the light did end, bending his back and cutting a swath with his standing scythe arm like a bent stick so he didn’t get a bad ache,
Every third cut and the scythe would need to be sharpened; the Thatcher’s would not take badly cut reed.
Then a tractor came and the reeds were cut with a scythe that was attached to a tractor,
If only they could make it so the tractor didn’t sink, the job would not stink,
The man with a scythe was still used to cut reeds from the ditches; the tractor could not do that, just yet.
Large balloon tyres were put onto the tractors, and cutting began in earnest keeping the Thatcher’s at bay and letting them get on with the job of putting new roof on someone’s cottage, a new life to a new roof, life was put back into an old house.
Hundreds of acres each year are cut and laid onto someone’s roof , making the reeds lay down and see the Thatcher work all day on a ladder and laying the reed , making a living as does the cutters, working in harmony, with the land that they farm, man and the reeds and houses have thatch,
No more cutting along a line of scythes , no more man and boy cutting and stacking up so the wind could dry them out but tractors and man working at technology and standing up in lines so the Thatcher’s have a dried out reed to make their thatch on a roof. The times they are a changing,
The men who cut the ditches are no more the scythes are all still, ditching is done these days with spray sprayed upon the water and hope it doesn’t kill the fish, like it did when it was first brought out,
Pike were seen standing in water never moving from the human form, not like they would when the scythes were on form.
When the scythes came within the drains all you saw was the round circle of where a pike was off down the drain, along the long stretch of water, he would run as the scythes scrunched into the reeds in the drain.
Then a sprayer came and the pike just stood there and the sprays eat into the skin and took away the freshness of the fish and they would die.
At last a spray would kill only the reeds and the men were put to other sues and learned new skills tractors had arrived all men had to learn horses and men were no more to be seen together on the land the time of the tractor had come to man.
