I guess things could be worse

I guess things could be worse
This is my once a year day
I should feel like I'm in heaven
I guess I feel like death warmed up
Now I've turned Fifty Seven
Felt my age yesterday
Today I feel the same
My candle is a year shorter
With a weak and flickering flame
I guess things could be worse
I could be Fifty Eight
That’s Twelve months more problems
Don’t need many more on my plate
Still looking on the bright side
I should be having fun
I’ll leave depression to my sister
As the old gal is Sixty One
So I’ll celebrate my Birthday
Doesn't mean that today life ends
I will be thankful for another year
And have fun with my friends

Wonderful poem, Peter. I can relate and loved the metaphoric-imagery of the candle being a "year shorter" with a "weak and flickering flame." Very nice, very nice indeed. I can certainly relate a good bit too, as I just recently turned 59. Take care. I hope your New Year finds you happier, healthier, wealthier and wiser.

The candle part was just something that happened
I didn't expect it but it just sounded right and fitted
When I read it back I liked the flow so kept it in
